A Federal project provides for an entrance channel 30 feet deep, and an inner channel and turning basin 28 feet deep. Depths in the channel may vary considerably between dredging operations.

The park has a jetty that creates waves perfect for surfing, and with a little practice, you can be a part of the action! The jetty focuses the ocean's wave energy onto the beach at Fort Pierce Inlet State Park in a way that creates more of the larger, “clean” waves that surfers need!

Black Drum, Bluefish, Flounder, Sheepshead, and Spanish Mackerel are also some of the most targeted species of fish in the bay and close to shore. Offshore fishing Ft Pierce can produce Blackfin, Dolphin (Mahi-mahi), Yellowfin, and Wahoo. There is also lots of Sailfish and some Blue Marlin to be found.

The breathtakingly beautiful half-mile beach welcomes visitors for swimming, snorkeling, surfing and scuba diving.

This inlet was built in the early 1900s when a storm closed in the natural inlet about one mile north of this location. During WWII, the Navy used the inlet and the surrounding land to train their landing craft crews. Later, the area became a county park and has been popular with surfers ever since.

Fort Pierce is famous for being a quaint fishing village, but take a closer look and you will find a treasure trove of activities. As one of the most diverse communities on the Treasure Coast, Fort Pierce has the cultural excitement to rival any “big city” atmosphere.

Do surfers surf at high tide? ›

Not necessarily — it depends on where you plan to surf. High tides are great if you're headed towards a reef break. The only exception is if it's near a bluff, in which case the waves rarely break before hitting land. Conversely, medium to low tides are better if you're surfing near a beach break.

The Fort Pierce Inlet is a superb place to access deep-sea fishing, aiming for dophin (mahi-mahi), tuna, sailfish, barracuda, pompano, amberjack, cobia, snapper & grouper. Fort Pierce is also home to the Indian River Lagoon, a 156-mile estuary full of fish.

The best time to go fishing is typically either early morning or late evening when food is abundant and fish naturally feed. Within an hour of sunrise and an hour after sunset are the times when fish are likely to bite the most. Fishing for some species of fish is much better at night than during the day.
