The following article is intended to assist with the installationof a NETGEAR Access Point on an existing LAN network. This document talks aboutconfiguring the Access Point (AP) to be in the same IP subnet as the network, and is intended for first time users.
This list below showssome models ofNETGEAR Access Point, and their default IP address. Clicka device to seethe usermanual and installation guide. The default IP address of your AP will be on a sticker on the rear or bottom of the AP. You will have to change the IP address of the AP if the AP default IP address is in a different subnet than your LAN network.

Discover the IP subnet of the existing LAN:
1. Connect a computer to the existing LAN.Ensure you have internet access.
2. On aWindows PC, open a command prompt. Doing this varies between Windows versions, but usually click the Start button and typecmd in the Search programs and files box.
Note: If this does not work, seeMicrosoft: Command Prompt FAQ for more details.
3. In the command prompt, enter the command ipconfig.Look at the resulting output, and note yourSubnet Mask and Default Gateway values.
Note: The Subnet Mask tells you what part of the default gateway IP address is the Subnet, and what part is the Host. In the screenshot above, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. This means that the subnet is the first 3 numbers of the IP address, 192.168.2 , and must be the same on every device on the LAN. The last number of the IP address, 1, is the Host, and must be different on every device on the LAN.
Note: It is also possible to get this information using non-Windows computers, such as Apple. Check your computer usermanual for instructions.
Configure a static IP address on your computer:
1. In order to configure the AP, you will have to temporarily configure your computer to have an IP address in the same subnet as the AP default IP address.
Note: The following example uses a Windows 7 PC. For other versions of Windows, see Microsoft: Change TCP/IP Settings.
Fornon-Windows computers such as Apple, check your computer usermanual for instructions.
2. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing center > Change adaptor settings.
3. Double click Local Area Connection.
4. Click Properties. The following screen displays:
5. Click to highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
6. Click Properties. Notethe current TCP/IP settings, as you will want to set the computer back to them later.
7. Set the IP address of the computer to 192.168.0.210 and the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
8. Connect the computer and the AP directly together, using an Ethernet cable. Note: A cross-over cable is not necessary.
9. Open aninternet browser. In the browser address bar, typethe default IP address of your AP (for example 192.168.0.100) andhit enter.
10. The AP login screen should appear. Log in, using the default login:
- Username: admin
- Password: password
Change the IP address of the AP:
Note: The configuration interface of the AP will vary from model to model, but willlikely resemble one of the two images below.
1. For more currentmodels: Click Configuration > IP.
For oldermodels: ClickIP Settings.
2. If you want the AP to getthe IP address automatically froman DHCP server on your network (typically running on the router), select DHCP Client Enable.
3. Click Apply. If you do this, you should also configure a DHCP Reservation on theDHCP server to ensure that the AP always gets the same IP address. This will allow youto easily accessthe APinterface once it is connected to your network.
4. If you want to manually set a static IP address on the AP:
- Choose an IP address that is not currently in use and is outside the range (scope)of any DHCP server on the network.
- Set the IP address and Subnet Mask to suit your network.
- TheDefault Gateway address can be left blank, or filled in with the default gateway address for your network.
- TheDNS server addresses can be left blank, or filled in with the DNS addresses for your network. In many casesthe primary DNSis the same as the Default Gateway, and the secondary can be blank.
Connect the AP to the existing network:
Disconnect the ethernet cable that connects the AP to the computer, and connect the AP toyour existing network.
Note: Other computers on the network should now be able to access the AP configuration interface by opening a browser and typing the AP IP address in the browser address bar.
Configure the wireless security settings on the AP:
For Home models, seeHow do I change the WiFi password or security level on my NETGEAR router?
Resetting your computer IP settings:
You will want to reverse the changes that you made to your computer IP settings.
In most cases, this will mean setting the TCP/IPv4 settings screen to Obtain an IP address automatically.
