  • Downy Serviceberry (deciduous)

Differences of tree types

Everything about these trees

Same image but now with the Platinum Expansion trees

Of course, there are differences between the tree species. You should keep those differences in mind as they concern the season they grow in, the way of harvesting timber and the possibilities to process and receive yield from them.

Harvest type

  • Deciduous trees are all cut by hand with a chainsaw.
  • Cypress and Stone Pine (both are conifers) are cut with a chainsaw, too.
  • Spruce and Pine (conifers) are cut with a harvester.

Growth period

The different types of trees vary when it comes to the duration of growth. Depending on the type of tree, growth periods can differ between two and 24 in-game days.

Sales value and further processing

The thickness and length of the trunk as well as the amount of branches depends on the type of tree. This has a direct influence on the sales value and the kind of processing possible. Trees with a lot of branches gain less yield, unless you cut off the branches. You can use the branches to produce wood chips, if you want to.

How to proceed different tree types

Wood chipping with the Heizomat HM 8-400 KLC wood chipping machine

Generally speaking, the longer and thicker the trunk, the higher the yield. That’s why conifers like the pine with their small branches and long, straight trunks are mainly used for timber production.

Deciduous trees are more crooked and have many thick branches, so they are more suitable for the production of wood chips. Such as the oak: it has a thick trunk, but it is not particularly straight. In addition, the branches are very large.

Conclusion: Conifers for timber production, deciduous trees for wood chip production.

Tree Planting

What you need

  • You need a tractor to attach and operate the tree planter.
  • You need a tree planter for well... planting trees. You find planters in the “forestry equipment”-section of the dealership.
  • You need tree saplings. You find those in the “pallets”-section of the shop. Here, you can choose between the different types of saplings. Just bear in mind, you can’t change your decision, like with crop seeds. If you want to plant another type of tree, you have to buy a new and corresponding pallet of saplings.

Optional:

  • You need a front loader attacher, a front loader and a pallet fork if you want to store your pallets of tree saplings at your farm or want to transport it to the field for refilling. To be able to use the front loader on the tractor, you must first purchase the necessary attachment from the dealership. To do this, drive the tractor to the dealer, park the machine in the vehicle options field and select the appropriate attachment.

Decorative landscaping

Placing tree via decorative landscaping in build mode

In the building mode, you find a varied selection of trees in the landscaping tab. You can choose from different sizes. The higher the tree, the more you have to pay. You can decorate your farm and properties with those trees - they're not recommended to use for actual forestry.

Planting trees

Planting trees with the Damcon PL-75 tree planter like in previous Farming Simulator games

Step 1: Filling the Machine

Position the rear of your tractor, with the weight attached in the front, behind the tree planter and attach it. Then fill up the machine by placing the tree planter next to the saplings and press the fill button - it is indicated in the control info box in the upper left corner of the screen.

Step 2: Planting Trees

Position yourself on your property, where you want to plant your trees. Lower the machine, turn it on, and start driving carefully in a (preferably) straight line. The tree planter will automatically plant one sapling after the other. Fill it up again, if all saplings are in the ground and you want to plant even more trees.

Step 3: Wait for it and watch it grow!

Now, all you have to do is wait. If you want to know how long the different types of trees take to grow, take a look at the table below.

The next step is, in case you didn't just plan to reforest your land with happy little trees, the harvest of wood. We cover wood harvest in the next tutorial.

Tree cutting

Deciduous tree

  • You need a tractor to transport and operate the wood chipper.
  • You need a chainsaw to cut down the trees. You also cut branches off and separate the trunk into smaller parts.
  • You need a wood chipper to collect all the cut parts of the trunk and process them into wood chips. You find it in under "forestry equipment" in the tools section of the dealership.

Cutting trees via the chainsaw

Step 1: Cutting trees

Use the chainsaw of your choice and position yourself in front of the tree. Just turn the saw in the desired direction. When a green glowing ring pops up, you are ready to cut. Just press the respective button. The tree always falls in the direction you are sawing.

Step 2: Cutting branches

After you cut the tree down, you have to separate the branches from the trunk. Just turn your chainsaw at the right angle and cut the branches as close to the trunk as possible. Repeat the whole process until the trunk is completely free of branches.

When you are done, you have to cut the trunk and huge branches into smaller, more handy pieces for easier processing with the wood chipper.

Step 3: Producing wood chips

To process the logs into wood chips, you have to pick up the wood with the crane of the machine, place it onto the funnel-shaped conveyor belt and let the machine shred the wood.

Just unfold the machine, position the crane above a piece of wood, bring it down and close the gripper. Now, you lift the crane and steer its head with the piece of wood above the conveyor belt. Lower the crane and open the gripper.

The piece of wood will be automatically moved into the machine and processed into wood chips. Deliver them to the selling point when the tank is filled up.

Conifer tree

  • You need a harvesting machine, if you want to cut down spruces, and pines. Use it to harvest the trees and to cut the trunk into smaller pieces.
  • You need a chainsaw, if you want to cut down stone pines, and cypresses.

Tree Harvester:Step 1: Cutting down spruces and pines

The harvesting machine saves you a lot of steps harvesting conifers. First, take a seat in the vehicle, select the desired length of harvested trunks with the respective button and drive to the tree. Turn the machine on. Position the header of the crane as far down as possible. Press the respective button to cut down the tree, and it is already done!

Step 2: Cutting the trunk into smaller pieces

The cut trunk is still in the grip of the header. Check the desired length of the harvested trunks and press the button to cut them. Approximately, the length should fit the trailer, you will use to transport them to the selling point.

Chainsaw:Step 1: Cutting stone pines and cypresses

Use the chainsaw of your choice and position yourself in front of the tree. Just turn the saw in the desired direction. When a green glowing ring pops up, you are ready to cut. Just press the respective button. The tree always falls in the direction you are sawing.

Step 2: Cutting branches

After you cut the tree down, you have to separate the branches from the trunk. Just turn your chainsaw at the right angle and cut the branches as close to the trunk as possible. Repeat the whole process until the trunk is completely free of branches.

Transporting and selling wood

You can sell logs of wood or wood chips - but how should you sell your chopped trees, now? The answer to this question depends on the kind of tree you’ve grown.

Deciduous trees should be processed into wood chips. Conifer trees, on the other hand, are best for timber - so, you sell the unprocessed logs. You can learn more about the differences of trees in our introduction to forestry.

Transporting wood chips

You need a tractor and a trailer to transport wood chips to the selling point. We chose the following machines.

Step 1: Overloading

After you produced chips in the wood chipper and the tank is full, you have to transfer the freshly obtained wood chips to the trailer. To do so, you have to position your trailer next to the side to discharge and switch into the wood chipper. Press the respective button to unload. The wood chips will be automatically discharged until the trailer is completely filled.

Step 2: Transport

When the trailer is full, take a look at the price tab and search for the best selling point. You can either sell your wood chips to the Farmer's Market or the Biogas Plant. Once you have selected the selling point, drive over there and unload the wood chips in the designated area.

Transporting logs via trailer

For transport via trailer, you need a tractor and a log loader to transport the wooden logs to their destination. We chose the following equipment.

Step 1: Loading and Securing Trunks

Connect the loader to your tractor. Position the log loader parallel to the previously cut logs. Raise the crane and position it over the center of the log. Open the claw and grab the trunk. Close it again and lift the log. Move the crane with the log over the loading area. Make sure that the log is as straight as possible and close to the driver's cab.

Repeat this procedure until you picked up all logs. After that, secure your logs with tension belts. You can do that by pressing the respective button or get out of the vehicle and secure it manually.

Step 2: Transport and Selling

Sawmill

When the trailer is full, take a look at the price tab and search for the best selling point. You can either sell your wood at the Carpentry, the Sawmill, or the Biogas Plant. Once you have selected the appropriate selling point, transport the filled and secured loader to the respective area to unload the wood.

Transporting logs via container *

For transport via container, you need a truck with a low loader, a container, an excavator (or similar machine), and a wheel loader. We chose the following equipment for this task.

Lizard Forestry container sizes

Step 1: Choose containers

Containers come in three different sizes: 12 meters (40 ft), 9 meters (30 ft) and 6 meters (20 ft) long. The choice is yours, but you have to harvest trees accordingly by choosing the cutting length when operating the harvester.

Don't forget: the longer the logs, the more profitable they are when you sell them. The length of the logs should also be as close as possible to the length of the container. Too long, they won't fit. Too short, you will gain less money and waste space.

Loading logs to container

Step 2: Load up the containers with logs

Using an excavator, you load the containers up by lifting the logs and driving them to the opened side of the container. One by one, you fill up the container with logs.

Configuration of Low Loader 3A for load the various size container

Step 3: Prepare the low loader

Get the truck and the low loader. Depending on the container size, you can extend the length of the truck bed accordingly by pressing the designated button while operating the truck with the low loader attached. This way, you can transport longer containers.

Loading container on train

Step 4: Load containers onto truck or train

To load the containers onto the low loader, you use a powerful wheel loader with a pallet fork. Just like you would load a pallet onto a smaller truck, you pick up the containers with the fork and put them carefully on the truck. Now, you can deliver them to selling points, production plants or construction sites like the rollercoaster in Silverrun Forest.

Forestry Mulching & Tree Stumps

After chopping down trees, tree stumps are left on the field. If you want to plant new trees or use the land for other purposes, you need to get rid of the leftovers, first. It's quick and easy.

Tree stump

  • You need a tractor to operate the mulcher.
  • You need a forestry mulcher to get rid of the stump.

Getting rid of stumps

Step 1: Mount the machine

Position the rear of the tractor behind the mulching tool and press the respective button to mount the machine. Drive to the stump.

Step 2: Mulch it!

Lower the mulcher and turn it on. Now, you just drive over the stump. If it is too high, you can adjust the mulcher accordingly. And that's it.

Wood Chips

Wood chips

Wood chips are shredded wood that is usually used as a heating fuel. But since you don't need to heat in the game, you sell wood chips either to the biomass energy plant or to the Farmers Market for profit.

The extraction of wood chips is profitable, especially in the case of (deciduous) trees, as their odd-shaped trunks yield less when sold. Theoretically, however, the processing of other tree species is also possible to produce wood chips.

Wood chips are also a by-product of wood processing, and you will receive a small batch of wood chips when you process wood or boards in the carpenter's workshop, for example. The yield of wood chips is of course not as high as when you produce wood chips directly.

Wood Chipping Machines

Machines for wood chipping
  • You need a tractor to use the wood chipper and to transport the wood chips later in the trailer.
  • You need a wood chipping machine or a self-propelled wood chipper* to process tree trunks into wood chips. You can find both of them under "forestry equipment", either in the equipment or the vehicle section.
  • You will need a trailer to transport the wood chips to the point of sale.

Wood Chipper Machine or Self-Propelled Wood Chipper?

You can choose between a wood chip machine and a self-propelled wood chipper. The wood chipper machine is cheaper, and comes with a small tank suitable for smaller trees. You attach it to your tractor. If you only produce wood chips once in a while, this machine is sufficient.

A self-propelled wood chipper is an autonomous vehicle and doesn't require a tractor. Therefore, it is way more expensive, but is recommended if you plan for large-scale wood chipping and focus on running a forestry operation. It's also more suitable for large trees.

How to use a wood chipper

Step 1: Prepare wood and machines

First, you need the raw material in the form of felled tree trunks. Since deciduous trees are best suited for processing into wood chips, you can learn how to cut down deciduous trees professionally in our corresponding tutorial. It is best to cut them into smaller pieces first.

Once you have done this, you can continue with the above-mentioned machine selection for wood chip production: Place the tractor in front of the wood chip machine. Connect the machine and go to the logs or deliver them to a collection point beforehand. You can also find tips on transport in a separate tutorial.

Step 2: Insert logs into the wood chipper

Unfold the wood chip machine and turn it on. You must now use the crane to pick up the pieces of wood on the ground and lift them onto the conveyor belt. When the wood is properly placed on the conveyor belt, it will be pulled into the machine and turned into chips.

If you have cut logs into smaller pieces, you can also place them on the conveyor belt by hand - but this can take a little longer.

Step 3: Overloading wood chips

When the tank of the wood chip machine is full, you fill the wood chips into a trailer. But make sure that the trailer is not too high. Otherwise, the wood chips cannot be overloaded.

Place yourself with the left side of the chipper right next to the trailer - you have to stand really close to it until the "Start overloading" indicator appears - then press the appropriate button to start the overloading process. The trailer will be automatically filled until it is either full or the chipper is empty.

Caution: If you are not close enough to the trailer and the overloading prompt does not appear, you will dump the wood chips on the ground if you start the overloading process anyway. Then, you will need a front loader with a shovel, for example, to collect them again.

Step 4: Selling Wood Chips

When you have loaded the wood chips, open the prices overview in the menu. Find the most advantageous selling point for you and drive to the respective dealer.

Wood Marking *

When doing forestry and operating heavy machines in the dense forests, markings serve as waypoints and assignments of certain actions. This can help you and your friends in multiplayer mode to keep track of what you are supposed to do and where.

In deadwood missions, a new type of contract coming with the Platinum Expansion, trees supposed to be removed, are already marked. Fell only the marked trees - otherwise, you get a penalty for removing healthy trees!

  • Logging trail: Marking trees with two horizontal, parallel lines indicates that you are on a trail where machines move to the actual logging location.
  • Remove tree: Trees marked with the "backslash" are supposed to be removed.
  • Support tree: Trees marked with the circle are not supposed to be chopped down, but supported. Meaning, leave him (and his friends) alone, or plant new trees in the vicinity.
  • Saw off at this height is indicated by a horizontal line with an arrow facing down.
  • Deadwood is indicated with an exclamation mark. You will see this when taking on deadwood missions. They are to be removed.
  • X can have various meanings. Often, it just marks trees should be removed for whatever reason. Feel free to assign any meaning to this mark.

About Signs: While the "X" often just means "this tree is marked to be removed" for whatever reason, in some parts of the world it is only applied to hazardous trees (deadwood) that pose a threat to nearby trees. If you're new to forestry, you can work with the signs and meanings in the graphic above, or use them just like you prefer.

About Colors: Neither symbols nor colors follow a strict code, but are merely local or a forest ranger's personal preferences. In reality, though, colors usually associated with specific actions or purposes after felling the tree. Red or white is used in many regions when it comes to harvesting timber, forwarding within the forest and selling harvested logs. Blue or orange on the other hand are often traffic-related or used to mark logs that are to be destined for firewood.

Using tree marking spray

Spray cans by STIHL in various colors allow you to mark trees with a set of signs, so you and your friends know what to do. You find spray cans at the virtual dealership. Gameplay-wise, you can use any color. Choose your favorite.

Buy spray cans at the dealership in the "tools" section. You find various colors of tree marking spray in its own category. You equip it just like the chainsaw, either pressing the assigned key to swap inventory items or use the mouse wheel. You can switch the signs by pressing the respectively assigned keys, point at the tree and press the button to apply the chosen symbol.

Rock Breaking *

When bringing more than 40 new machines included in the Platinum Expansion to the forest, those big rocks may block your path.

If you want to plant trees in a certain location or want to turn an area into a field for agricultural operations, you have to get rid of them via the hydraulic breaker - the Paladin SFB 750.

File:Paladin SFB 750 store.jpg

Hint: When taking on specific contracts by your neighbors in Silverrun Forest, the rocks you are assigned to get rid of are marked with a tiny flag, so you can spot them.

What you need

Rock breaking
  • Skid-Steer Loader: New Holland L318
    • Hydraulic Breaker: Paladin SFB 750
Loading stones
  • Wheel Loader: Volvo-BM LM 841
    • Shovel Attachment
Transporting stones
  • Tractor: John Deere 7810
  • Trailer: Krampe Halfpipe HP 20

Breaking rocks into pebbles

Step 1: Get the hydraulic breaker

When you take on special forestry missions that require you to break rocks, they are marked with a red flag - easy to spot from afar. If you are creating your own path through the forest, you have to spot them without this helpful indicator.

Take a skid-steer loader like the New Holland L318 or C332 of your choosing (find out more about loading machines) and attach the Paladin SFB 750! You attach the hydraulic crusher like any other attachment tool.

Step 2: Break the rocks

Move to the rock in your path and activate the tool by unfolding it. Aim it at the rock and move the arm of your skid-steer loader into the rock until it vanishes bit by bit.

Step 3: Load the stones

Well - now, we got a pile of pebble-like stones, and we need to move it. Using a shovel, you can load it into the trailer to sell it at the stone crusher, earning you some additional money.

This is the perfect opportunity to make use of the Volvo-BM LM 841 wheel loader in combination with a shovel attachment tool. Load the stones into a trailer.

Step 4: Sell the stones

To transport stones, the Krampe Halfpipe HP 20 is a reliable choice - especially for construction sites, thanks to its torsion-resistant chassis and halfpipe-body for easy tipping. If you load the stones into the trailer using the shovel, you can now sell them at the stone crusher.

Winches

Forestry winches are contraptions designed to pull heavy logs with the use of wire ropes. They help you move long logs of chopped-down trees through the forest to a collection point, from where you transport them to selling points or production sites.

  • Winches exist in two forms in the game: as attachments for your regular tractors or so-called multipurpose tractors like the Pfanzelt Pm Trac - a specialized form of tractor.
  • You attach the rope of a winch to logs and pull them with your vehicle to a more spacious collection point.
  • Up to ten logs can be dragged across the forest with some winches, as two logs can be inserted into the implement directly. But beware, that only works with long and heavy logs, and driving too fast may result in losing them on your way.

How to use winches

Step 1: Attach the winch

Attach the winch of your choice to your tractor (and make sure it meets the power requirements) or use a multipurpose tractor like the Pfanzelt Pm Trac that comes with a handy gripping arm (in case you lose logs on your way). Drive the vehicle to the place in the forest where you harvest trees.

Step 2: Grab and attach a rope

After harvesting one or multiple trees, grab a rope from the back of the implement. With the rope "in hand", you move to the log, look at it and press the assigned button to attach the rope.

Tip: If you're using the Pfanzelt Pm Trac or a similar machine with a gripper arm, you can pick up a log and insert into the implement directly (see image above). Two logs, one left and one right, can be dragged across the ground like this. But beware, driving too fast or mounting logs that are not long and heavy enough may result in loosing them on your way.

Step 3: Move the logs

When attached, you can carefully drag the logs to the collection point or wherever you want to transport them to. This is especially helpful on steep terrain to get the logs out of the deep forest.

Tip: If the terrain is still too challenging, you might want to get the logs out of there by using yarders to overcome impassable terrain.

Step 4: Further transport

If you need to transport large quantities of logs from the collection to a selling point or production site, use trailers or containers.

Yarders

Yarders are a fun piece of logging equipment. With the Platinum Expansion, we introduce two different kinds of yarders: the Koller K-300-T and the Koller K 307c-H. You find both of them in the "forestry equipment" section of the dealership.

  • Yarders are used to bypass hilly or otherwise impassable terrain and transport logs out of the dense woods by using a system of cables to pull them from their stump to a collection point.
  • In Silverrun Forest, you find some paths that may lead you to places that can serve as collection points (or you just create your own where you want it). You can move logs via yarders up or downhill.

The Koller K-300-T can only drag your logs upwards over a span of 500 meters (1,650 ft) - the collection point must be above the area where you harvest. It's the cheaper of the two yarders and has lower power requirements for your tractor.

The Koller K 307c-H is more flexible and can move both ways. It spans 840 meters (2750 ft) and can transport your logs further that the "smaller" yarder. Also, the power requirement for your tractor is higher.

How to use yarders

Step 1: Bring your yarder!

Attach the yarder of your choice to your tractor (and make sure it meets the power requirements) and place the yarder at your chosen collection point.

Note: The K-300-T (the smaller one) can move logs upwards only. If you use this yarder, you place it topographical above the place where you harvest logs, so you move the logs up to the collection point.

Step 2: Grab a rope

Grab a rope from the back of the implement. With the rope "in hand", you move to the location in the forest, where you want to harvest trees. If using the K-300-T, as noted above, you have to move down hill, now.

Step 3: Stretch up the rope

Find a sturdy tree to attach the rope to. If you aim at a suitable tree, it is indicated that you can attach the other end of the rope to it. Now, you have a straight line of rope that spans between the collection point and the harvesting area.

Step 4: Move the carriage

Now you can see the carriage appearing that you connect to cut logs. You can send the carriage on its way or make it follow you, so it's always right behind you.

Step 5: Attach a log

Attach a cut log from the harvesting area to the carriage by grabbing a rope. Look at the log and attach the rope by pressing the assigned button.

Step 6: Move the log

When attached, you can send the carriage on its way - or make it follow you if you're on your way to the collection point anyway. You can choose via the context menu / by pressing the assigned button to choose the transportation mode.

Step 7: Load up the logs

After repeating steps four to six, you now have a pile of logs at your collection point. The job of the yarder is done, for now. Instead, you have to load the logs onto a trailer or into containers - depending on the location and the terrain of your collection point.
