Listen to Psalm 132, Luke 1:26-35

Psalm 132(A)

A song of ascents.

1Lord, remember David
and all his self-denial.(B)

2He swore an oath to the Lord,
he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(C)
3“I will not enter my house(D)
or go to my bed,
4I will allow no sleep to my eyes
or slumber to my eyelids,
5till I find a place(E) for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

6We heard it in Ephrathah,(F)
we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:[a](G)
7“Let us go to his dwelling place,(H)
let us worship at his footstool,(I) saying,
8‘Arise, Lord,(J) and come to your resting place,
you and the ark of your might.
9May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;(K)
may your faithful people(L) sing for joy.’”

10For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.

11The Lord swore an oath to David,(M)
a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants(N)
I will place on your throne.
12If your sons keep my covenant(O)
and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
on your throne(P) for ever and ever.”

13For the Lord has chosen Zion,(Q)
he has desired it for his dwelling,(R) saying,
14“This is my resting place for ever and ever;(S)
here I will sit enthroned,(T) for I have desired it.
15I will bless her with abundant provisions;
her poor I will satisfy with food.(U)
16I will clothe her priests(V) with salvation,
and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.(W)

17“Here I will make a horn[b] grow(X) for David
and set up a lamp(Y) for my anointed one.(Z)
18I will clothe his enemies with shame,(AA)
but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”(AB)

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(A) to Nazareth,(B) a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(C) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(D) Mary; you have found favor with God.(E) 31You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(F) 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(G) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(H) 33and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(I) will never end.”(J)

34“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(K) and the power of the Most High(L) will overshadow you. So the holy one(M) to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.(N)

FAQs

The virgin birth proves that nothing is impossible with God. We must believe that God has the power to do all things, otherwise we do not serve God, but an idol. What does Luke 1 26 35 mean? ›

Luke 1:26–38 relates how a virgin learned she would miraculously bear the Son of God. The angel Gabriel comes to Mary, who is engaged to a man named Joseph. Gabriel tells Mary that she will bear a son, to be named Jesus. He will be the Promised One long awaited by the people of Israel.

What does Luke 1, 26, 38 teach Christians about the incarnation? ›

Meaning that God became one of us at birth so He could one day save us from our sin. The miracle announced to Mary was that as a virgin she would give birth to God in His humanity. This would be accomplished without the seed of fallen man but be done by the God The Holy Spirit coming upon Mary.

Why was Mary chosen to be the mother of Jesus? ›

The Lord is with you (Luke 1:26-28) Joseph and Mary were an insignificant couple from an obscure town until God decided to send them a surprise from heaven. What is a short reflection about Luke 1:26-38? ›

God is often deeply hidden, and God is active through each of us for each other. In the visit of Mary, God came close to Elizabeth in the ordinary and homely moments of every day. These Advent and Christmas days give us the space to allow the huge eternal mystery become part of the everyday.

What are the three things that the angel told Mary? ›

What the Angel Told Mary
  • First, he called her “highly favored” and said that the Lord was with her. ...

  • Fourth, Mary received the word about the greatness of this child and ruler.

What is the pastoral prayer for Luke 1 26 38? ›

Teach us by your Spirit to pray, “let it be with me according to your word.” Calm our hearts as we learn pray, “let it be with me according to your word.” Show us how to say “here am I, your servant,” without pretense, and with a spirit of sacrificial love. All for the sake of the world you so love.

What is the lesson of Luke 1:26-28? ›

We can say that the virgin birth is a good Christmas story for children. But what we can't do is ignore the truth as God sees it: to doubt the conception of Jesus Christ in the virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit is doubting the character, power, and truthfulness of God, and thus is nothing other than unbelief.

What are the lessons to learn from the parable of the persistent widow? ›

Unlike Jesus' other parables, the main lesson of this one is stated upfront: God wants us to pray and not give up (or “lose heart,” v. 1). “Losing heart” is a product of the weariness that comes from living in a sinful, hostile world. Sometimes we are tempted to lose heart because of the injustice we see all around us.

What can we learn from Luke 1:26-56? ›

Grace comes from Jesus' living in you – Gabriel doesn't tell Mary you have favor because “you're pretty amazing, you do you, God is so impressed with you”. Rather, He tells here God's favor to you is going to be Jesus living in you. You are going to have a son, who will be great, the Son of the “Most High” God.

What is the prayer based on Luke 1 26 38? ›

"Heavenly Father, you offer us abundant grace, mercy, and forgiveness through your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Help me to live a grace-filled life as Mary did by believing in your promises and by giving you my unqualified "yes" to your will and plan for my life."
